CTEP:

Purpose: Computer lab staff will provide computer support to youth and adult residents using Advantage Center computers on a drop basis. Some staff will help with specific computer lab classes.

Commitment: 2 hours each week on any day Monday thru Thursday or Saturday.

Qualifications:

  • Sixteen + years of age
  • Comfortable working with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Able to speak, read, and write English
  • Sensitivity to needs of students and ability to be creative in response to them
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from volunteer site

Expectations:

  • Volunteers will provide technical assistance to residents using Advantage Center computers; assistance may be in one-on-one or in group settings
  • Volunteers will arrive promptly at the agreed upon day and time
  • The volunteer will attend a CommonBond Community site/program orientation
  • The volunteer will provide as much advanced notice as possible if he/she cannot fulfill his/her commitment on a particular day
  • Volunteer will access Advantage Services Staff for support and assistance

Additional Information:

  • A criminal background check will be conducted on all volunteers eighteen years of age and older
  • Curricula for some of the programs listed above are available from Advantage Center Staff

IBM E-Mentoring Tutor

Background:

PWCC opened it s doors in 1924 as a settlement house, The Center was the first agency in the Twin Cities dedicated to serving African-Americans. For Over 75 years it has remained a cornerstone for North Minneapolis.


In its early years, PWCC was a place where young, African-Americans met for recreation, fellowship and skill development. Later it evolved into a home-away-from home for numerous African-American civic leaders, educators, entertainers and students. Today PWCC has integrated programs that can serve an individual’s needs from infancy through their senior years. Programs address the needs of children, youth, families and elders and provide guidance and assistance to help individuals and families empower themselves.



Job description:

IBM is looking for two volunteers to help us with our newly started IBM E-Mentoring program. Our Program consists of a group of six 3rd graders, and five 5th graders that attend school in the north Minneapolis area. Our goal is to implement reading and math software programs, so that they will be able to build their skills for passing the Minnesota Basic Standards test. The volunteers would have to come in every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, to help the Americorp worker guide the kids through the programs.


Qualification:

Must have some knowledge of computers, as well as some experience with working with kids.
